Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (kg/m²). In imperial units it is weight in pounds ÷ height in inches², multiplied by 703.
What are the BMI categories?
Below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is the normal range, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is in the obese range.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a useful general guide but does not distinguish muscle from fat, so it can mislead for athletes or very muscular people. Treat it as one signal, not a diagnosis.
